Dear Friends:
DAY OF HOPE
Last Saturday, June 20, about 110 people came to St. Anthony’s for our Day of Hope. Those in need came from throughout the Diocese—from Woodbridge to Vienna to Arlington. The scope of assistance that was provided was impressive and truly uplifting.
Through the combined efforts of more than 100 volunteers and representatives of 18 organizations, we
- Provided information and briefings to over 90 individuals,
- Assisted 45 families with emergency food supplies,
- Pre-screened 24 households for Food Stamps, and assisted 14 with completing applications,
- Mentored 23 individuals on their resumés and job search,
- Provided counseling for 12 families,
- Advised almost 30 individuals seeking legal help,
- Provided financial advice to more than 20 households,
- Discussed housing problems with a variety of individuals,
- Assisted many people with internet job searches, including completing about 15 on-line job applications.
Based on the success of our efforts, Catholic Charities will now decide where to host a similar event elsewhere in the Diocese. The need is so great, and this day brought new awareness to many about how each of us can make a difference and help alleviate despair. Many thanks to all of the St. Anthony’s volunteers.
HIGHER EDUCATION FOR YOUNG IMMIGRANTS
This Sunday, after all the Masses, we will be holding meetings with people who have concerns about their own higher education or that of their children. V.O.I.C.E. (Virginians Organized in Community Engagement) is putting together a “Public Action” in July with Virginia Governor Tim Kaine and other state representatives. We are concerned about the number of young people who are unable to attend Virginia public universities because of their immigration status or that of their parents. At this “Action” we would like to bring our concerns to our elected officials. If you would like to come to talk about your experiences, please join us after the Masses on Sunday in Room 1 of the Church.
FR. ANDREW’S LAST WEEKEND
As of July 1, Fr. Andrew will be working at Queen of Apostles in Alexandria. This is the last weekend he will be available here in the Parish. Please take the opportunity to say “good-bye” and keep him in your prayers as he begins a new journey.
PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION
This weekend our second collection will be taken up for “Peter’s Pence.” Please be generous.

Ron Vincoli Memorial Cardiac Screening
Last February many parishioners were unable to receive cholesterol screening due to the overwhelming increase in the number of participants. We will be offering a mini-cardiac assessment event, including FREE blood-pressure screening, and FREE cholesterol screening on July 12, from Noon to 4 PM in Room 12 of the School. This event will honor Ron Vincoli, a vibrant, active member of our faith community who died on April 1st. In Parish Nurse Ministry we were blessed to have Ron’s help with many of our screening events and health fairs over the last six years. We will be making appointments for the screenings at the Parish Office beginning Monday, June 29. The Office is open from 9 AM to 9 PM, Monday through Friday. For further information, please call Georgine Redmond at 703-820-7111, ext. 111.
JULY SENIOR LUNCHEON—NEW DATE—JULY 10!
Because of the 4th of July holiday, July’s Senior luncheon will be held on Friday, July 10. We will have an indoor picnic to celebrate Independence Day, immediately following the noon Mass, in Room 12 of the Parish School. Traditional picnic food, prizes and lots of time for fellowship. Our health spot will be: “Protecting Ourselves from the Summer Heat.” Come dressed casually and bring a friend. If you need a ride, please call Georgine Redmond in Parish Nurse Ministry, 703-820-7111, ext. 111.
Help on First Friday! Bring Someone to Mass on Sundays!
Volunteers are needed to help with the First Friday Health Spot Luncheon for Seniors. In addition, we need help with transporting parishioners to the luncheon, to doctor’s visits and to Mass on Sunday. Any parishioner who might be willing to shop for another parishioner, either on a regular or as-needed basis, would also be welcome. If you can help in any of these capacities, please contact Georgine Redmond at 703-820-7111, ext. 111.
Hunger Doesn’t Take a Vacation!
Please keep up your support for the St. Anthony Food Pantry during the summer. We are experiencing a drop in donations, but the poor and hungry never take a vacation. The Food Pantry welcomes donations of rice, beans, dry pasta, and sugar. If you can donate money, please mark your check for the “St. Anthony Food Pantry” or deposit it in the Poor Box in the lobby of the Church.
SOME 40th Anniversary Inaugural Concert
Fr. Grinnell, who is the Vice-chair of the Board of SOME (So Others Might Eat), invites everyone to join SOME as it commemorates 40 years of service to the homeless and poor in Washington, D.C. with a special benefit concert at the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine on Wednesday, July 1, at 7:30 PM. The renowned Georgetown Chorale will lead a choir of 100 voices in a performance of Henry Mollicone’s moving Beatitude Mass (for the homeless) and selections from Les Misérables. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children and students, and they are available at www.georgetownchorale.org. Concert proceeds will help SOME to continue to feed, clothe and serve the most vulnerable members of our community in these most difficult economic times.
25 Already on Board for Our Pilgrimage to Oberammergau 2010
Fr. Grinnell is delighted to announce that he will lead a Pilgrimage to Oberammergau, Germany, from May 12 through 22, 2010. We will begin our trip in Greece with a three-night cruise on the Aegean Sea. From there we fly to Salzburg, then on to Munich, the capital of Bavaria, and on to Oberammergau. In keeping with their 377-year old promise, the villagers of Oberammergau present their Passion Play every ten years. In 1633, when the Black Plague was rampant, the villagers took a solemn oath: if God spared them from the Plague, they would present a day-long play depicting the last week in the life of Christ. The tradition continues, and the play will be reenacted in 2010. If you would like to join us, or would like more information, you will find a brochure at the Front Office, or e-mail Carol Poplin at office@stanthonyparish.org.

Needed: 250 Haiti School Sponsors—Only $120
We will once again continue our sponsorship of school children in Gros Marin and Sudre parishes in Haiti. Last year, St. Anthony sponsors were responsible for over 220 Haitian children attending school, who might otherwise not have had that opportunity because of financial hardship. This year, we anticipate taking on an additional 20 or 30 children, so your help will be more important than ever. Letters will be sent to sponsors from past years during the month of June. It costs $120 a year to sponsor each student. If you have not participated in the program before and would like more information, please contact Chris Gonzalez at hblr2@cox.net.

If you would like to donate, please call Kira at MRS at 703-841-3870 or e-mail her at k.hamrin@arlingtondiocese.org.
