Dear Friends:
COMMIT TO THE BISHOP'S LENTEN APPEAL CHARITY IS FAITH IN ACTION
This coming weekend at all the Masses every parishioner will have the opportunity to support the 2010 Bishop's Lenten Appeal (BLA). At each Mass we will listen to Bishop Loverde talk about how important our support for this Appeal is and how our sacrificial giving will support the tens of thousands of people that the Diocese reaches out to each year. Please be as generous as possible.
"THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU" WEDNESDAY EVENING CONFESSIONS DURING LENT
This Lent we want to encourage Catholics to return to the healing, merciful Sacrament of Penance. We will begin the extra confession times on Ash Wednesday. Each Wednesday thereafter, confessions will be heard from 6:30 to 7:00 PM and then again after the 7 PM Mass until 8 PM. Please encourage friends and family to take advantage of this additional opportunity to receive the healing power of God.
RENE SANCHEZ BECOMES A SECULAR FRANCISCAN
Last Sunday, January 31, at the 3:30 PM Mass René Sánchez, one of our ushers, made his Profession for Life to the Third Franciscan Order of St. Francis. This was a wonderful opportunity for the community to witness one young man's willingness to take on this responsbility and commitment to God. When you see René, congratulate him and keep him in your prayers. If you, or someone you know, is interested in becoming a secular Franciscan, call Fr. Moises at 202-812-0580.
CONFIRMATION RETREAT -- A TRUE BLESSING!
On Saturday, January 23, 60 of our candidates for Confirmation participated in a retreat in preparation for reception of the Sacrament in May. Lia Salinas, our Director of Religious Education, shared with me some of the comments made by the Confirmandi:
- What I'm taking away from this retreat is that God will always be with me no matter what, even if I think He is not.
- It helped me to understand how I can change to be a better person.
- I am glad I was here and I will take God's love with me always.
- Great talks, helped me realize I can talk to God whenever.
- I liked it becuase they were encouraging us to volunteer and do service work even after we get confirmed.
Many thanks to the wonderful group of catechists and volunteers who facilitated the retreat. Please keep all of the candidates and their families in your prayers.

Good Pay -- Flexible Hours: Help Wanted! No. Virginia Census-Takers
Every ten years, a census of our population is conducted. The results help determine how federal funds are spent in our community on things like roads, parks and other public services, as well as our representation in government. As a census-taker, you will help to make sure that everyone is counted.
A 2010 Census job offers good pay, flexible hours, paid training, and the chance to work independently in your own community. For the 2010 Census, thousands of census-takers are needed for temporary jobs. It's possible that you would work in your own community and earn $20 per hour. For more information, including a practice test, contact www.2010censusjobs.gov or call the toll-free jobs line at 1-866-861-2010. Call soon.

Reflection on Stewardship -- How Much Should I Give?
This is a very personal decision. Many Catholics use the Bible's tithe as a guide. They may: offer 10% of their income; use 10% as a starting point, and increase the amount over time; or set 10% as a goal, and try to work up to it. Many divide their gifts -- they give half to the Parish and half to other church and community charities.
Before you decide how much to give: pary for guidance; talk it over with your family; and reflect on the meaning of "sacrifice." Giving a bit more than feels comfortable can make your gift all the more selfless -- and all the more satisfying.
"Give liberally and be ungrudging when you do so, for on this account the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake." Deut. 15:10
